How Much Does it Cost to Build a Pickleball Court?
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the United States and space is limited for people trying to practice, play pick-up games, coordinate leagues, or just get together for a game. In fact, cities all over the country are striving to meet current demand while developers swoop up vacant malls and other abandoned commercial spaces. With dimensions smaller than tennis, volleyball, and other courts (but reasonably close) a pickleball court makes sense for families and enthusiasts alike. If you’ve found yourself Googling what it might set you back to put in your own pickleball court, you’ve landed in the right spot.
Costs to Build
A reasonable 44 feet by 20 feet, a pickleball court isn’t much more than an even slab of concrete with proper finishing and treatment. You’ll want to make sure it’s installed properly (preferably by a professional) so it doesn't settle, crack, or erode, but the process can be fairly straightforward.
To build your own home court, a professional install will cost you between $10 and $25 per square foot. That comes out to between $8,800 and $22,000 for the whole project.
It’s essentially a four-step process that begins with planning and prepping the site where the concrete or asphalt will be poured for the court. A professional contractor will work with you to determine the best place for your court, considering factors like weathering, sun glares, and surroundings. They’ll then clear, level, and compact the site to prep it. Step two involves the sub-base and base construction of the court–typically either concrete or asphalt about four inches thick. Next, the surface is installed. Typically this is either an acrylic coating that is applied by a professional, or modular polypropylene tiles that snap together to provide the playing surface. Once installed, the surface is painted with the proper lines and accessories like netting, lighting, and surrounding landscaping are installed.
Offset Costs by Renting your Court
With so much demand for places to play pickleball, you might be wondering if there’s any way to offset the cost of installing your own court by perhaps monetizing it while you aren’t using it. The answer is yes!
RecDay is an online marketplace that connects people who own recreation spaces with guests interested in renting these spaces for use by the hour. The platform makes it easy to list your court (or other space–think: yoga studio, golf simulator, indoor soccer field, gymnasium) quickly and easily. It allows hosts to create a sleek, professional landing page for their listing, then facilitates all the logistics (like calendaring, booking, reservation management, communication, secure payment processing, and receipts).
