Getting Started as a RecDay Host

If you have a great recreation space, making it available to guests can be a great way to monetize your space and share your passion. This guide helps walk hosts through what to consider in getting started.

Why Great Guest Experiences Matter

Providing guests with a positive experience is important for several reasons. First, guests who enjoy using your space will make their way back to it as repeat guests. Second, happy guests spread the word about your space, leading to additional patrons. Lastly, happy guests leave positive reviews, which help your space build credibility, attract first-time visitors, and have numerous other benefits.

What to Consider

Provide a clean and safe space.

Ensure your space is clean and tidy before guests arrive. Check your setup (including equipment and surroundings) to ensure nothing is loose, unsecure, or otherwise out of place.

Make it easy to access your space.

Consider how guests will access your space. If the space is self-serve (i.e. accessible without a host present via a lock box or keypad entry), explain clearly how to enter and exit the space. Even if you will be home when guests arrive, be sure to provide directions on where to park, where to enter, and what they can expect ahead of their visit.

Keep your calendar availability current and accurate.

Once your listing is live, you’ll want to make sure your availability is accurately reflected on your booking calendar. This will help avoid scheduling conflicts and cancelations, which can lead to negative guest experiences.

Offer great value.

Consider the type of space you have and how people might use it. Add value by providing things like music, specialty lighting, unique equipment, and advanced technology. Be sure to note these accommodations in your listing, so guests know what to expect.

Adopt a mindset of continuous improvement.

Guests often provide feedback about their experiences either directly or through reviews. When they don’t, consider asking for feedback via a brief and polite message. This allows you to learn (even small insights) what guests like and dislike about your space and adjust accordingly.
